This project consists of analog photographs extracted from my maternal family album that I collect, scan and digitally intervene, subtracting the people portrayed and leaving only the spaces and objects that are there. I also leave the marks of scratches over the dates printed in some of the photographs. It is a gesture that some member of the family made and I left intact. In my interpretation, this gesture speaks about the denial of time and death, and the resistance to change.

The photos that I collect had a purpose when they were taken: to build the memory of a prosperous family history. This memory, with apparently happy moments, created an identity. But identity and memory face a problem: oblivion. It is a work where I reflect on the impermanence in life and images, and how meanings behind pictures change, in spite that photography is a medium which intention at first is to freeze time.

The desert is an image that figures the meaning of this project. The sand covers the footprints of those who walk it, and on the horizon you can only see an eternal present.

Desert

Este proyecto consta de fotografías análogas extraídas del álbum familiar materno que colecciono, escaneo e intervengo digitalmente, sustrayendo a las personas retratadas para dejar solo los espacios y objetos que se encuentran ahí. También dejo las marcas y raspaduras sobre las fechas impresas en algunas de las fotografías. Estas raspaduras son un gesto que algún integrante de la familia hizo y dejo intacto. Bajo mi interpretación, este gesto habla de la negación del tiempo y la muerte, y la resistencia al cambio.

Las fotos que colecciono tenían un propósito cuando fueron hechas: crear una memoria de una historia familiar próspera. Esta memoria, con momentos aparentemente felices, formó una identidad. Pero esta identidad y memoria se enfrentan a un problema: el olvido. Es un trabajo en donde reflexiono sobre la impermanencia en la vida y las imágenes, y cómo los significados de las imágenes cambian, a pesar de que en un principio la intención del medio fotográfico es congelar el tiempo.

El desierto es una imagen que figura el sentido de este proyecto. La arena cubre las huellas del caminante y en el horizonte solo se ve un eterno presente.
