Hope

Series of photographs in 120mm black and White film during a trip to Providence Island, Colombia. The series depicts empty spaces, ruins and landscapes of the island’s sea. The name of the series (hope) appears written upside down in an abandoned boat alongside the main road of the island. I think of this word as a different kind of hope that talks about calm and detach from modern cities: detach from their speed, their technology and urge for progress and success. Although the island is not abandoned, its inhabitants live along the abandonment as if it were a natural thing to do; therefore I wanted to focus my gaze over those abandoned elements that integrate the island’s landscape that, for me, unveil the spirit of the place while it also unveils my own longing. The multiple broken facades that I found show a place that doesn’t want neither need to cover their tracks and lacks, instead, the people accept themselves the way they are. It is not a spirit that hopes to change and adapt but chooses to live in a place of peace that is found in the present, not in the future.

Serie fotográfica realizada en película de 120mm durante un viaje a la isla de Providencia, Colombia. La serie muestra espacios vacíos, ruinas y vistas del mar. El nombre de la serie aparece escrito al revés en un bote abandonado junto a la carretera principal de la isla. Tomo esta palabra escrita al revés (Hope) como una esperanza diferente que habla de la calma y el desapego de la ciudad moderna: el desapego de su velocidad, su tecnología y su urgencia de progreso y éxito. Si bien la isla no está abandonada, sus habitantes sí viven junto al abandono como algo natural y quise enfocar la mirada sobre esos elementos en renuncia que integran el paisaje de la isla y que para mí develan el espíritu del lugar al tiempo que devela un anhelo propio. Las fachadas rotas de estos paisajes de la isla muestran un lugar que no quiere cubrir sus huellas y carencias sino que se acepta como es. No es un espíritu que anhela el cambio y la adaptación a un mundo moderno sino que más bien espera vivir en un ámbito de paz que se encuentra en el presente, no en el futuro.
